UCR Academic Senate: Document Review and Approval Process

Divisional issues

  1. An issue starts in one of two ways:
    • Divisional issues such as curriculum changes, new graduate program proposals, new undergraduate program proposals, combined BS/MS degree proposals and admission requirements* go to the appropriate Senate committee.
    • Divisional issues such as FTE transfers, department name changes, endowments, bylaw and regulation changes, Chancellor requests and Senate-Administration task forces go to the Senate Office and the UCR Division Chair.
  2. The committee reviews the issue.
  3. Executive Council discusses it.
  4. The Division approves it.
  5. The Academic Senate's response is sent back to the initiating body.

After committee review, an issue may go straight to Division approval, or straight to the Academic Senate's response, without the steps between.

Issues referred by the Academic Council to the Divisions

Examples: University admission standards, faculty compensation, joint Senate/Administration task force reports, APM changes, policy changes, and requests from the President or the Regents. The Academic Council sends these two ways:

  • To the Division:
    1. The Senate Office and the UCR Division Chair.
    2. Committees review the issue.
    3. Responses are received in the Senate Office.
    4. The Senate determines whether Executive Council review is necessary.
    5. The Academic Senate's response is sent to the Academic Council, as one of the divisional responses to the Chair of the Academic Council.
  • Systemwide:
    1. The Chair of the Academic Council.
    2. Systemwide committees and the Division Chairs review the issue.
    3. The systemwide committees respond to the Chair of the Academic Council.
    4. The divisional responses go to the Chair of the Academic Council.
    5. The Academic Council takes action.
